Absa and BAKE

For many young Kenyans today, content creation has evolved from a side hustle into a full-time profession. Bloggers, influencers, podcasters, YouTubers, and digital entrepreneurs are building businesses, creating employment, and influencing consumer behaviour across multiple industries.

As this creator economy continues to expand, financial literacy is becoming an essential life skill alongside creativity.

It is against this backdrop that Absa Bank Kenya has renewed its strategic partnership with the Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE), reaffirming its commitment to supporting Kenya’s growing community of digital entrepreneurs.

The renewed collaboration will see Absa sponsor the BAKE Awards 2026 Business Category while rolling out financial and digital literacy programmes designed specifically for creators and young entrepreneurs.

From Passion to Business

Building a successful digital brand today requires much more than creating engaging content.

Creators must manage income streams, budget for equipment, understand taxation, negotiate commercial partnerships, protect themselves from cyber threats, and plan for long-term financial security.

Unfortunately, while Kenya has made remarkable progress in financial inclusion, financial literacy remains relatively low.

According to the 2024 FinAccess Household Survey, formal financial inclusion now stands at 84.8 percent of adults. However, only 42.1 percent of Kenyans possess adequate financial literacy, leaving many entrepreneurs vulnerable to poor financial decisions despite having access to financial services.

The partnership between Absa and BAKE seeks to close this gap by equipping creators with practical skills in personal finance, savings, investment, entrepreneurship, business management, digital safety, and responsible online engagement.

Supporting Kenya’s Growing Creator Economy

Kenya has become one of Africa’s most vibrant digital markets, with creators increasingly influencing business, politics, education, entertainment, and consumer purchasing decisions.

The BAKE Awards have mirrored this growth over the past decade.

Now celebrating their tenth anniversary, the awards have grown from recognising 14 categories during their inaugural edition to 23 categories that celebrate excellence across blogs, podcasts, social media, and other digital publishing platforms.

This year’s Business Category, sponsored by Absa, will spotlight creators who provide valuable insights on entrepreneurship, business, investments, innovation, and economic development.

Investing in Young People

Speaking during the announcement, Mwihaki Wachira, Director of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Absa Bank Kenya, said the partnership reflects the bank’s commitment to empowering young people through its NextGen agenda.

She noted that creators need both creative talent and financial knowledge to build sustainable livelihoods as the digital economy continues to grow.

BAKE Chairperson Kennedy Kachwanya added that creators are becoming important contributors to Kenya’s economy by creating jobs, driving innovation, and expanding civic participation through digital platforms.

He noted that while creativity opens opportunities, financial knowledge enables creators to transform those opportunities into sustainable businesses.

A Partnership for Long-Term Impact

Beyond recognising excellence through the BAKE Awards, the partnership represents an investment in the future of Kenya’s digital economy.

By combining BAKE’s expertise in digital literacy and online engagement with Absa’s leadership in financial education and banking, the collaboration aims to nurture a generation of financially responsible digital entrepreneurs capable of building resilient businesses.

As more young Kenyans choose entrepreneurship over traditional employment, initiatives that blend financial empowerment with digital skills are likely to play an increasingly important role in ensuring the creator economy remains both innovative and economically sustainable.
