Beyond the Trophy: How the FIFA World Cup 26™ Became a Global Business, Culture and Connection Platform

By AdminJuly 21, 2026

The FIFA World Cup 26™

For 30 days, the world did more than watch football. It participated in a global experience that blended sport, culture, technology, creativity and commerce.

The FIFA World Cup 26™ delivered the emotions that have always defined football, celebrations, heartbreak, national pride and unforgettable moments, but it also highlighted something bigger: the World Cup has become one of the most powerful platforms for global connection.

From emerging football nations announcing themselves on the world stage to brands creating new ways for fans to engage with the tournament, the 2026 edition demonstrated that football is no longer just a 90-minute contest. It is an ecosystem that brings together communities, businesses and cultures.

Football as a global marketplace

The modern World Cup is not only a sporting event. It is a global marketplace where brands, creators, technology companies and consumers intersect.

Millions of fans followed matches through television, streaming platforms and social media. Content creators transformed moments from the tournament into conversations that reached audiences far beyond traditional sports media.

For businesses, the opportunity was not simply to place a logo beside the tournament. The challenge was to create meaningful experiences that connected with fans.

This is where brands with a genuine connection to football stood out.

Visa brings the World Cup experience to Kenya

In Kenya, football excitement was felt across cities, homes and public spaces. As fans followed every dramatic moment of the tournament, brands looked for ways to bring the global experience closer to local audiences.

Visa Kenya, as a Worldwide Partner of the FIFA World Cup 26™, created one of the country’s notable fan engagement celebrations, culminating in a final watch party at Nairobi Street Kitchen in Westlands.

The event was more than a match screening. It was designed as a celebration of football culture, bringing together fans, Visa cardholders, banking partners, fintech companies and members of the creative community.

More than 250 guests attended the event, which featured entertainment, games, prizes and football-inspired experiences alongside the live broadcast of the final.

The watch party represented the conclusion of a wider campaign that had included mall activations at Junction Mall and Sarit Centre, a content creator collaboration, and a FIFA-themed mural celebrating Kenyan illustrator and muralist Chelwek Chela.

Connecting payments, culture and everyday experiences

For Visa, the World Cup partnership extends beyond sponsorship visibility. It represents an opportunity to connect global sporting moments with local consumer experiences.

Chad Pollock, Vice President and General Manager, Visa East Africa, highlighted the role football plays in bringing Kenyans together.

“Football has a way of bringing Kenyans together like nothing else, and that spirit was on full display tonight.”

He noted that the campaign evolved from mall activations to the final celebration at Nairobi Street Kitchen, bringing together fans, partners and cardholders.

The strategy reflects how financial technology companies are increasingly positioning themselves not only as payment providers but as enablers of experiences.

Spain’s victory and Argentina’s resilience

At the centre of all this was, of course, football.

Beyond the Trophy: How the FIFA World Cup 26™ Became a Global Business, Culture and Connection Platform

Congratulations to Spain for winning the FIFA World Cup 26™. Their technical quality, tactical intelligence and consistency throughout the tournament earned them the ultimate prize.

But Argentina also deserves recognition. Their journey to the final demonstrated the competitiveness and character that has defined their football history.

The final was a reminder that sport is not only about winners and losers. It is about the stories, emotions and memories created along the way.
