Econet InfraCo Leverages AI to Slash Diesel Costs by 30% Across Africa

Econet InfraCo, the tower infrastructure arm of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, has achieved a groundbreaking feat in Africa by deploying an AI-powered solution to manage fuel efficiency, cutting diesel costs by 30%. This innovative approach, developed in partnership with sister company Cassava Compute, marks a first for tower operators on the continent. By analyzing how and when diesel generators are used, the AI Fuel Mode platform has transformed how businesses tackle one of their biggest expenses, particularly as global diesel prices rise due to geopolitical tensions.

The savings emerged just as Econet InfraCo released its recent half-year results, where Chairman Godfrey Gomwe emphasized the tangible benefits of this technology. “Using AI to fine-tune generator deployment has streamlined our operations and reduced costs significantly,” Gomwe stated. The system learns from patterns in generator usage, ensuring they run only when and where needed, thereby conserving fuel without compromising network reliability. This is not just a cost-saving measure but a demonstration of AI’s potential to solve real-world operational challenges.

Africa’s mobile operators rely heavily on diesel generators due to inconsistent grid electricity, with an estimated 500,000 such units powering networks continent-wide. Econet InfraCo and Cassava Compute analyzed these deployment patterns and built an AI-driven fuel management matrix to optimize their use. The result is a system that dynamically adjusts generator activity based on demand, preventing wasteful idling or overuse. This level of precision was previously impossible with manual oversight, especially as diesel prices continue to climb amid global supply chain disruptions.

The collaboration between Econet InfraCo and Cassava Compute utilized NVIDIA’s advanced AI computing infrastructure in Cape Town, South Africa, to build the platform. This cutting-edge technology processes vast amounts of data to predict generator needs, making it a first-of-its-kind solution for tower operators globally. Beyond Africa, the platform’s success opens doors for similar applications in industries like mining and manufacturing, where energy efficiency is critical. Cassava AI plans to expand the solution’s availability, signaling a shift toward smarter resource management worldwide.

Looking ahead, Cassava AI is already developing an AI Energy Mode platform to help Econet Wireless optimize electricity usage across its mobile networks. Both initiatives aim to boost demand for GPU computing capacity at Cassava’s AI factory, underscoring the growing role of artificial intelligence in addressing infrastructure challenges. For businesses operating in environments with unreliable power grids, this breakthrough offers a practical path to sustainability and cost control. By blending data-driven insights with innovative engineering, Econet InfraCo is setting a new standard for operational efficiency in the telecom sector.
