Building Brighter Futures: Airtel Money and ChildFund Bring Learning and Water Infrastructure to 1,500 Learners in Marigat

A KES 37 million project called Building Brighter Futures had its groundbreaking on September 30, 2026, in Marigat, Baringo County, and is set to transform the learning experience for 1,500 learners through infrastructure and access to water and sanitation. Airtel Money Kenya, through the Airtel Africa Foundation, partnered with ChildFund to launch the initiative, which targets Marigat Integrated Day and Boarding Primary School and Marigat Special School for the Visually Impaired. The project will deliver 13 classrooms, 29 toilets, a fully equipped ICT lab, a library renovation, a boys' dormitory, and a 30-point handwashing station across both schools.

Bonke Michael, Acting Managing Director at Airtel Money Kenya, said the company understands the importance of creating access and opportunity, and that commitment extends beyond financial services to supporting the communities they serve. Djibril Tobe, Managing Director at Airtel Kenya, added that the organisation's commitment to communities is anchored on education, digital inclusion and creating opportunities for young people to thrive. In Marigat, the investment covers learning environments, water and sanitation, as well as ICT facilities, devices and connectivity for learners and teachers.

Water availability across the schools will be strengthened through pipeline extensions, solar-powered pumps and water storage, with Airtel Money funding handwashing stations and gender-segregated, disability-friendly sanitation facilities to improve hygiene for learners and teachers. Eric Oyoo, Programs and Sponsorship Director at ChildFund Kenya, said every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment, and that the partnership helps address barriers by improving access to learning facilities, safe water, sanitation and digital resources.

The Marigat project, led by Airtel Money, is part of a wider partnership that will benefit over 2,000 learners across four public schools in Baringo, Wajir and Garissa counties, including Garissa School for the Deaf and Catholic Integrated Primary and Junior School in Wajir County. Baringo County faces significant challenges with water access, as nearly 80% of the county is classified as arid and semi-arid land, and the County Government is targeting an increase in water access to an average of 52% by the end of 2027.
