Afreximbank welcomes new African credit rating agency as milestone for financial architecture

Afreximbank welcomes the AfCRA launch on 7 October 2026 in Port Louis Mauritius as a milestone. The event marks a step toward strengthening Africa's financial architecture and expanding the continent's capacity for credible independent analysis of African credit risk. Credit ratings influence access to capital and shape the cost at which governments and businesses finance development. The agency aims to provide independent rigorous evidence based assessments that show a full understanding of local structures.

The AfCRA launch adds a new African led source of credit opinion to the market. Its value will be judged by the credibility of its analysis the quality of its data and the transparency of its methodology. The agency also seeks to deepen understanding of African sovereigns sub sovereigns and corporate credit. Many African issuers remain unrated while local currency and sub sovereign markets have limited rating coverage.

The AfCRA launch aligns with the position of the Alliance of African Multilateral Financial Institutions on assessment standards. Afreximbank and its peers argue that African multilateral financial institutions should be evaluated on fundamentals performance legal frameworks mandates and operating models. Proper understanding of these characteristics is essential for balanced credible risk assessments in practice today. The approach supports a more informed view of African risk across the continent today now.

The AfCRA launch prompted comments from Denys Denya senior executive vice president of Afreximbank today. The rating methodology AfCRA develops must recognise the uniqueness of our environment and its institutional structures. Most importantly AfCRA must set a new benchmark for the continent maintain its independence and remain wholly owned and controlled by Africans. We must all use it and in return expect a complete assessment of where we (Africa) stand the strengths the market has ignored and the weaknesses we still need to fix.

The AfCRA launch is seen as complementary to existing international and regional rating agencies today. It broadens the range of credible analysis available to investors and issuers while strengthening competition transparency and analytical capacity within Africa's credit markets. As Africa seeks to mobilise the scale of capital required for industrialisation trade infrastructure and economic transformation credible African institutions become increasingly important.

The AfCRA launch receives congratulations from Afreximbank to the African Union the African Peer Review Mechanism and all parties involved. The bank looks forward to the contribution the agency will make to deeper more transparent and more efficient African capital markets. This development supports the goal of mobilising capital for industrialisation trade infrastructure and economic transformation across the continent. You can expect the new agency to play a role in shaping future financing conditions for African governments and businesses.
